We’re getting ready for the race again this year and things are coming together nicely. The event is scheduled for April 9, 2011.

This is a special day in Camarillo!  The City Council issues an “Official Proclamation” announcing it citywide.  On Peanut Day, you will see men, women, and teenagers distributing free bags of roasted Kiwanis peanuts to people walking in and out of businesses around town and accepting any donations passers-by are willing to make.

During the forty-four years that the Kiwanis Club of Camarillo has been in existence here in Camarillo, it has involved men and women who feel a need to better their community through volunteer service such as delivering meals to shut-ins, providing new infant car seats and bicycle helmets for needy families, outfitting boys for Boy Scout camping, providing children’s books and equipment to the Camarillo Library, furnishing a breakfast for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, and more.  In addition, we have given over $100,000 in college scholarships to graduating seniors from our local high schools.  We need your help to continue and broaden our community service activities in Camarillo.

The Kiwins are sending 12 people to The Rescue Mission on September 25, 2010, to cook and serve food to people currently challenged by homelessness.

For this year’s Relay for Life, the Kiwins are going to participate as a club as well as help the Kiwanis Club of Camarillo set up and break down the booths. Times will be provided at a later date for all volunteers.

The Kiwins will be helping with The Harvest Festival on October 16, 2010.

On, October 21, 2010 the Kiwins have a fundraiser at Marble Slab. The store will donate a portion of the proceeds from all sales made to people coming in with the Kiwins’ flyer during the time of the fundraiser to the Kiwins Club to help fund their charitable activities and leadership training. We will have a PDF of the flyer posted for you soon.

On October 23, 2010 the Kiwins have a fundraiser at America’s tire company where they will be washing cars.

There are more events coming up in October that have yet to be planned, but this is the calendar for know. ACHS Kiwins can keep up with each other on their Facebook Group.

The 2010-2011 school year is getting off to a great start with upcoming events planned and a new faculty advisor.  Mike Prewitt, beloved boys’ basketball coach and physical education department co-chair, has agreed to serve as faculty advisor to the club this year.

Club rush will be held September 29, 2010.  The Kiwins will provide popcorn, candy, and promotional buttons to get across their message to their fellow Cam Hi students about the Kiwins Club, the charitable works that it does, and the invaluable leadership training that Club members receive through weekly meetings and conventions.

Community service activities are also, of course, on the Club’s calendar, the first being a Halloween fundraiser for The Pediatric Trauma Prevention Program operated by the Cal-Nev-Ha District of Kiwanis International.  Kiwins will go trick-or-treating, collecting change rather than candy to donate to this very important cause.

On October 23, 2010, the Cam Hi Kiwins will have a carwash at America’s Tire in the Trader Joe’s shopping Center off Carmen Drive/Daily Drive.  America’s Tire faces the freeway along Daily Drive.  Funds raised will be applied to the Kiwin’s charitable activities and program costs.

The Kiwins had their annual banquet recently as well as a fundraiser at Marble Slab Creamery.  There will be another Marble Slab fundraiser on October 20 or 21st; we’ll update you and provide the event flyer in a later posting as we get closer to the actual event.

The Cam Hi Kiwins regularly volunteer at Food Share in Oxnard, helping pack boxes of food for families in need and other tasks around the facility.  Their next scheduled volunteer date is October 2, 2010.

The Turquoise Division has been a division of one school, that being Camarillo High School, for a long time, but they are looking to increase by one more school soon.  Mr. Kwon advised that he has approached Foothill Technology High School in Ventura and the administration at that campus is very receptive to having a Kiwanis Sponsored Leadership organization there.  Once formed, the new club would be part of the Turquoise Division.

The Kiwins of Camarillo High School, which now has over 100 members, not only has as a member the Division Lt. Governor, it also has the Kiwins Governor of the Cal-Nev-Ha District.  That is a lot of strong youth leadership coming out of just one Kiwanis Sponsored Leadership club.

As with any Kiwanis organization, the function of Kiwins is to make the world better one child and one community at a time.  This is accomplished in two ways:  1) by teaching leadership skills to youth through Sponsored Leadership clubs like Kiwins, the mission of Kiwanis is achieved in that the youth belonging to the clubs are empowered to become tomorrow’s leaders and decision-makers with the needs of children and the community in mind; 2) by engaging in community service projects themselves, the Kiwins at Camarillo High School perform charitable works that benefit others.

To the end of the latter, the Kiwins at Camarillo High School are involved in a number of community service activities.  Given the limited amount of time they have to keep up their grades and serve their community at the same time, some of what they do is raise money for other causes.  This year, they have started a fundraising drive for the March of Dimes, placing donation boxes for coins in classrooms throughout the Camarillo High School campus.  The money collected will then be turned over to March of Dimes to help promote pregnancy and baby health.

Coming up in Fall 2010, the Kiwins will again be participating in Relay for Life with the Kiwanis Club of Camarillo, which makes a pancake breakfast for the volunteers walking in the event every year.  Around that same time, the Kiwins will be helping the Kiwanis Club of Camarillo with its annual Peanut Day fundraiser.  The following Spring, they will help the Kiwanis Club of Camarillo with its annual George Thayer 5K/10K Run.

The Kiwins at Camarillo High School also raises money for Pediatric Trauma Prevention, which is a cause taken up by Kiwanis Clubs throughout Division 42 of the Cal-Nev-Ha District.  In addition to this fundraising effort, the Kiwins recently participated in the Letter Carrier Food Drive in which local postal delivery people picked up bags of donated food from people along their delivery routes and dropped it off at Food Share in Oxnard.  Kiwins from Camarillo High School then sorted and packed the food for distribution by area food banks, which was quite a hands-on undertaking.

The governing board of the Kiwins Club of Camarillo High School recently voted in its new officers for the upcoming year and is currently planning its installation dinner.  The date is tentatively set for June 18, 2010, but could change.  Club officers are currently working to secure a location for the event, which could influence the date on which it is held.  We’ll post the actual announcement for the banquet once all the plans have been made.  The Kiwins would love to have members of the Kiwanis Club of Camarillo in attendance!

At last year’s 31st Annual George M. Thayer 5K/10K Run, held by the Kiwanis Club of Camarillo, local radio personality Bo Jaxson participated as part of a publicity stunt wearing a wedding dress from Camarillo Bridal, accompanied by “bridesmaids” from the local store.

This year, the 32nd Annual George M. Thayer 5K/10K Run, to be held April 10, 2010, is accompanied by the 1st Annual Crazy Publicity Stunt Contest, where your company can enter a team of runners in crazy costumes and/or carrying crazy props for your own social media extravaganza.  Click here for official rules and entry form.

So long as you keep it safe and family friendly, your team of up to five runners can participate in our 5K run, take videos and pictures, and use it for your social media marketing.  The Kiwanis Club of Camarillo will also be video recording the various teams and posting clips on our blog where members of the community will be able to vote for their favorite team.

Your Publicity Stunt Contest entries must be received no later than March 30, 2010, so fill them out and send them in!!!  This is a fun and inexpensive way to marketing your business and help the community at the same time.  All proceeds from the run go to the George M. Thayer Scholarship Fund and other projects carried out by the Kiwanis Club of Camarillo to benefit the children of our community.
