Camarillo Health Care District Seeks Volunteers
The Camarillo Health Care District has approached the Kiwanis Club of Camarillo seeking volunteers to assist with activities benefitting the senior citizens of Camarillo. Volunteers are needed for the following:
- Servers for the Apple a Day Cafe – Up to four (4) servers are needed on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 11am to 1pm at this community-based program that provides nutritional meals and social opportunities to seniors at the Camarillo Community Center, located at the corner of Carmen Dr. and Burnley Ave.
- Greeters/Receptionists for the Nail Clinic – The Nail Clinic operates every weekday with morning hours running from 9am to 12pm and afternoon hours running from 12pm to 4pm. The District is asking for two volunteers, one for the morning shift and one for the afternoon shift, though it may be possible share shifts with other volunteers.

Internet Satellite Club Brochure for Camarillo Kiwanis
We’ve announced on this blog its purpose as a tool for members who can’t make our regular meetings in person to still nonetheless participate in Club activities. Now we’ve published a brochure that will be handed out at upcoming events for those interested in becoming new members. Technically, our members who participate via our web site are members of a “Satellite Club” – a special group of members who use alternative means to participcate in their membership in the local Kiwanis Club of Camarillo. The Kiwanis Club of Camarillo operates an Internet Satellite Club as its alternative venue to its regular weekly in-person meetings, which are held every Tuesday at Round Table Pizza in Camarillo from noon to 1:3opm. Kiwanis Participates in Healthy Kids Day at YMCA
Pediatric Trauma Prevention Sticker
The Kiwanis Club of Camarillo participated in Healthy Kids Day at the Camarillo YMCA on April 18, 2009. Volunteers handed out Pediatric Trauma Prevention (“PTP”) Stickers to parents of children still riding in car seats and booster seats and shared information about our Club’s PTP program.
As part of a District-wide program operated by Kiwanis clubs throughout California, Nevada, and Hawaii, the Camarillo Kiwanis raise funds for programs that prevent trauma to young children and address the needs of young children who have been traumatically injured.
One of those programs includes providing our PTP stickers to car seat users. In the event of an accident, it can often be the case that the adults in a vehicle are taken to a different hospital than their children. When the children are not hurt, they can be taken to a local police station pending notification of other family members.
But, when parents and children become separated, it can be difficult for emergency personnel to know who to contact. When children are injured, it becomes imperative that emergency medical personnel know if the injured child has any drug allergies, is taking any medication, or has pre-existing medical conditions that would influence how treatment is to be rendered. By placing completed PTP stickers on their children’s car seats, families ensure that emergency personnel have the information they need to render appropriate medical attention and contact family members right away.
A large part of the Kiwanis’ PTP program is preventing pediatric trauma care from resulting in additional trauma to injured young children. The Cal-Nev-Ha District of Kiwanis International, of which the Kiwanis Club of Camarillo is a part, operates the Kiwanis Doctors program, which trains medical doctors in pediatric trauma care and then sends these doctors around throughout the District providing training to emergency medical personnel on proper trauma care to young children, thereby preventing things like adult-sized equipment being improperly used on little bodies and inappropriately large dosages of drugs being administered to small children.
The Kiwanis Club of Camarillo raises funds through a number of efforts to help finance the costs of its PTP program. We contribute to the Kiwanis Doctors program, purchase PTP stickers to distribute to Camarillo families free of charge, and purchase car seats and car seat installation supplies that we donate to the Ventura County Fire Department, which operates a certified car seat installation program at the Camarillo Airport.

Scholarship Applications Now Available
The Kiwanis Club of Camarillo provides scholarships to eligible high school seniors every year. Funds for these scholarships are generated by the George M. Thayer 5K/10K Run, which is held every year and will be held on April 4, 2009 this year.

High school seniors interested in applying should have their applications in by no later than May 1, 2009. eScrip for Food Share
The Kiwanis Club of Camarillo, as part of its community service endeavors, is participating in and promoting the eScrip program on behalf of Food Share, Ventura County’s Food Bank. Click here for an informational flyer and registration form.
Register your grocery store club cards with eScrip using the registration form and whenever you make purchases using your club cards, donations are automatically made by the grocery stores to Food Share in your name. No additional charges are passed on to you! You help just by doing what you always do when you shop for groceries.
CSUCI Asks for Volunteers
The Kiwanis Club of Camarillo was recently approached by California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI) to assist with its graduation ceremonies on May 16, 2009. Volunteers would be needed to assist with parking, hand out programs, act as guides to the guests, etc. Volunteers must attend an orientation on May 13 at noon or May 14 at 5:30pm. Volunteers would need to be at CSUCI at 7:00am on May 16 and the event is expected to last to around noon. This is a fun and exciting event! Volunteers Needed to Distribute Health Pamphlets
The Kiwanis Club of Camarillo was contacted by the Camarillo Health Care District for help distributing their quarterly pamphlets, titled Healthy Attitudes. About 300 copies are delivered to six churches throughout Camarillo for distribution to their congregations. The Health Care District needs 3 volunteers who would be willing to pick up the pamphlets at the Health Care District offices on April 1, 2, or 3 to deliver them to these churches. It’s expected that one person could handle 2 churches apiece. The task would require a pre-delivery phone call to each church to coordinate delivery. The pamphlets need to be delivered between April 1 and 8, 2009. If you are interested in helping, please contact Joe Dilibert at jdilibert@verizon.net.
